45th U.S. Secretary of Health & Human Services

Xavier Becerra was the 45th U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services and the first Latino to hold the role. A Sacramento native and the first in his family to graduate college and become a lawyer, Becerra began his career advocating for individuals with mental illness. He served 12 terms in Congress, helping pass the Affordable Care Act and protect Social Security and Medicare. At HHS, he led the nation’s COVID response, expanded health coverage to a record high, with more than 300 million Americans possessing their own health insurance, and launched historic prescription drug price negotiations. Xavier is married to Dr. Carolina Reyes, a maternal fetal medicine specialist and professor of medicine at UC Davis Medical Center. Together they have three accomplished daughters, Clarisa, Olivia and Natalia.
