Liz Ortega

California Assemblymember, 20th District

Assemblymember Liz Ortega is a longtime labor and community leader with over 20 years of experience advocating for working families and safe, healthy communities. She represents California’s 20th Assembly District, including Hayward, San Leandro, Union City, and surrounding communities. As Chair of the Assembly Labor and Employment Committee, Ortega represents over 19 million workers, advancing policies that protect employee rights, strengthen workplace safety, and combat wage theft. She also serves as Vice Chair of the California Legislative Latino Caucus, championing civil rights and equity for all Californians. A native of Oakland, Ortega began her career in the labor movement and became the first Latina leader of the Alameda County Labor Council. As a legislator, she has focused on expanding access to healthcare, creating quality jobs, and protecting vulnerable communities. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Phoenix.
